Choirs we love
Here are some of our favourites. Some are unconventional, some are inspiring – all of them are brilliant.
First, a choir called Sense Of Sound covering Justin Timberlake's
Cry Me A River on the BBC's
Last Choir Standing show. It was this performance that inspired Vicky to set up Note-Orious!
Soprano Michelle put us on to this genius version of Lady Gaga's
Bad Romance by On The Rocks, an acapella choir from the university of Oregon. There's lots more of them on YouTube, including a flash performance of
Rick Astley's Never Gonna Give You Up on a New York subway train, and the most beautifully sung cover of
Coldplay's Yellow.
This choir of schoolchildren are from Staten Island, New York, and you could easily lose a whole day watching all the brilliant clips of them on YouTube. Here, they're singing Lisztomania by French group Phoenix, but check out their take on Let's Dance by Lady Gaga and Pictures Of You by The Cure and, oh, all their other stuff.
Here are drama-school choir Ysgol Glanaethwy, also on
Last Choir Standing. Not only are this lot effortlessly nailing The
Rhythm Of Life, they're doing it in English
and Welsh.
And here's a clip from 2010's Sport Relief. Gareth Malone, the poster boy for choral singing (apart from our own musical director Matthew, OBVIOUSLY) had a week to put together a choir from a random collection of sportsmen – and here's the result. It's certainly not perfect, but it is powerful and weirdly moving. Or is it just us?
Finally, click here for another favourite, featuring a choir of US senior citizens known as Young @ Heart, who were the subject of a film documentary. This clip (which YouTube won't let you embed in other websites) is of them singing Coldplay's Fix You in tribute to two of their members who had passed away in the run-up to the concert. If you don't find yourself welling up when you watch this, your heart is made of stone...
